Why is Dollar Tree getting more expensive? ›

In the company's most recent earnings call, executive chairman and CEO Rick Dreiling said the increase was part of Dollar Tree's “multi-price point strategy” to offer shoppers a more “relevant assortment,” Business Insider reported.

One key approach is bulk buying from suppliers. By purchasing millions of units to distribute across their numerous locations, they can acquire products at a lower cost, similar to the savings Costco offers its customers through bulk purchases. Another method dollar stores use is sourcing liquidated items.

The steep jump comes less than a year after the brand revealed its $5 price cap in June 2023, which followed a base price raise from $1 to $1.25 in 2021, per Yahoo Finance. And let's just say consumers are not happy about having to pay more at what once was a dollar store.

Dollar General offers higher quality and a wider variety of products, but prices range from $3 to $10. There are over two times more Dollar General stores than Dollar Tree stores and the shopping experience is typically better.

Although many items available at your local Dollar Tree, like personal care, food and beverage items, will see a new cap price of $7, up from a max price ceiling of $5 set in June 2023, not all items will be affected by this increase. The vast majority of items will remain priced at $1.25.

Dollar Tree is yet again not sticking to the dollar theme in its name. The company announced last month that it would be increasing the prices on items again. The official prices announced were a minimum of $1.50.

Dollar Tree on Wednesday said it plans to close nearly 1,000 stores over the next several years, after disclosing significant losses in its latest earnings report. The discount store chain lost $1.7 billion in the fourth quarter, down sharply from earnings of $452.2 million a year ago.

The retail giant then rolled back its prices to $1 in 2023, a move that coincided with cooling inflation. But now, Dollar Tree has announced that it will be adding a host of new products to its inventory lineup this year. And many of them will cost well more than $1.
