Houston storms: One dead after houses under construction collapse Tuesday | Houston Public Media (1)

At least one person died and more than 300,000 CenterPoint customers were without power on Tuesday afternoon while heavy storms and strong winds pushed through Harris County.

Two houses under construction collapsed in Magnolia while strong storms pushed through Houston on Tuesday.

One person died during the collapses on Tuesday afternoon, Jason Herrman, Division Chief with Magnolia Fire Department confirmed.

Herrman could not confirm if the deceased person was a worker, or if any others were injured during the incident.

The county is under a severe thunderstorm watch until 6 p.m. Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service.

NWS issued an enhanced chance of rainstorms cooling off the Houston metropolitan in the afternoon after increasingly high temperatures and humidity stretched across the city over Memorial Day weekend.

Meteorologists warned of a slight risk of thunderstorms in the morning before increasing the risk to a level three later— indicating a higher chance of severe storms hitting Houston.

Houston roads flooded

Glen Park and downtown Houston received more than three inches of rain during the storms, according to the Harris County Flood Warning System. More than two inches of rain was recorded in areas of northwest Houston.

Southeast Houston received more than two and a half inches of rain.

Several roads were underwater by 2:40 p.m. Tuesday, according to Houston Transtar:

-IH-10 East Westbound at Waco St.
-IH-45 North Southbound at N. Main St.
-IH-610 East Loop Northbound at Clinton Dr.

Several vote centers without power, clerk says

At least a dozen vote centers had lost power by 1 p.m. Tuesday, Teneshia Hudspeth, Harris County Clerk said in a statement.

“We are working to restore power at vote centers,” she said. “We encourage voters to go to HarrisVotes.com to locate their nearest open vote center.”

Hudspeth encouraged voters to continue monitoring weather before heading out to vote.

Just hours after they opened back up, HOV lanes closed again because of severe storms passing through Houston on Tuesday, according to the Metropolitan Transit Authority.

Multiple METRO routes were experiencing delays because of the storms Tuesday afternoon.

All METRORail services were suspended around 2:30 p.m. Tuesday. METRO will provide continuous service updates on their service alerts webpage.

Clusters of storms moved from the Piney Woods region southwards to the coast between late morning and mid-afternoon, according to NWS. Another system of storms is moving from central Texas headed east towards the southeast section of the state.

“If the afternoon storms are widespread, then the potential for the overnight storms decreases,” according to NWS. “But, if the afternoon storms don’t develop, then the potential for the overnight storms increases.”

Possible threats associated with the storm include damaging wind gusts greater than 75 miles per hour and large hail greater than two inches.

People should be weather aware and prepare by having multiple ways of receiving alerts of threatening storms, according to NWS.

A Severe Thunderstorm Watch is in effect through 6pm.

Houston is at an enhanced risk of excessive rainfall and thunderstorms on Tuesday. Galveston County is at an enhanced risk for increased rainfall.

“Generally expecting up to 1-2″ of rainfall through Wednesday morning, but isolated higher amounts of 3-5″ is possible with the stronger storms overnight,” according to NWS.

Scorching holiday heat

Excessive temperatures and humidity cast extreme heat across the city as agricultural fires in Mexico left a haze in the sky over the weekend.

Temperatures hit a high of 96 degrees at the Bush Intercontinental Airport on Monday, but a heat index at Houston’s Hobby Airport reached 115 degrees, caused by temperature and relative humidity, according to Space City Weather.

Temperatures are set to cool off slightly over the week into the upper 80’s while Wednesday and Thursday are forecasted to have increased chances of showers. Temperatures again will increase over the remainder of the week as a rain chances fluctuate heading into the weekend.
