We can expect NIL contract announcements to be coming fast and furious as of 12:01 am July 1st. i though we might have one thread where these announcements are dropped.

Was listening to Big Ten Today on Sirius/XM on Monday and a NIL Consultant for IU indicated that one of the first persons to announce just after midnight will be a female athlete from a SEC school with 3 separate endoresments contracts. Total value of the contracts could be in the low six figures. He did not give any additional details as to who this athlete was or what school

should be an interesting next couple of months

Possibly the gymnast Suni Lee going to Auburn this fall after going to the Olympics. She's the first Hmong-American to go to Olympics (an ethnicity within southeast Asia)

So someone in a non-revenue sport is going to get 6 figures? This is going to be very interesting.

If that’s true, Bo Nickal could’ve made some legit coin.

Honestly, they're not a dime a dozen like the revenue sports and their sport is international.

The Athletic is behind a paywall so I won’t summarize it, but Franklin is already briefing NIL during official visits and our recruits are already setting things up https://theathletic.com/2680457/2021/06/30/what-penn-state-is-telling-recruits-about-name-image-and-likeness-changes-during-official-visits/?source=user_shared_article

I figured NIL would fit well into Franklin’s strengths.

Yes. Those sports may be niche sports among the big boys, but there's a lot of marketing demand in that niche.

The biggest winner in NIL is the true superstar football and basketball players. The second biggest winners in NIL is the female athlete, particularly if they are attractive. You have a number of women in golf, tennis, gymnastics, volleyball, softball that have larger social media followings than most any college football or basketball player.

The article talks about buying domain names as recruits, but kaedensaunders.com was already taken (since 2013, so not new). But it brings up a question, will people buy domain names of up and coming recruits in an effort to squat on them and try to sell them later once that recruit gets big?

That's interesting. On "Full Ride" this morning, they were talking about stuff being posted on Youtube and players making $$$ off of adds and clicks. Not sure how all of that works but I can see that being a thing to start. At least for the lesser known players.

Everything I have heard is that female swimmers and gymnasts are going to be cashing in this summer.

I still think NIL and the NCAA not being able to limit benefits makes PSU, among the other power schools, a big winner.

I don’t think this changes the trajectory of college sports as dramatically as some have suggested. The rich will keep getting richer which is a trend that has been going on for a few decades now.

The biggest difference is that the players gain a little more control and an opportunity to benefit from their labors out in the open which opens up a lot more possibilities for them….

Assuming most 18-21 year old athletes are no better money managers than I was at this age, I am surely hoping that someone is providing reasonable and accurate tax info to the athletes. Assuming there are athletes making $100k+, they are going to be shocked that they will only keep 50-60% of that amount in cash. They will be in a 30+% Federal tax bracket, have 5-8% in state taxes and have to pay 15% in FICA since the will under independent contractor contracts.
I hope we don’t see a rash of 23 year olds with “lotto winners syndrome” and that none of the athletes take their compensation in merchandise ( since Merch has a value and taxes need to be paid on that value.

Yes, some of these kids have been doing their own thing on tiktok and youtube for a while, but now they get to find ways to increase that traffic and profit from it. If you are an elite college athlete and you have the personality and a good social media presence, you will benefit. No personality equals no endorsem*nts, regardless of how elite you are.

What I think will be interesting is recruits, likely more in non revenue sports, but still who show up in almost a reverse recruitment situation. For 99.9% of kids a school becomes more valuable because of they NIL money they'll provide, but there are going to be some interesting cases that show up where an athlete might become a hotter commodity on the recruiting trail because of the brand they already bring with them.
