Kubatko George Economakis, 66, made Homemade Soups By George By ROBERT HILSON JR. SUN STAFF George Economakis, a longtime restaurateur who found added success in Baltimore County by selling his tasty Homemade Soups By George, died Monday of cancer at Stella Maris Hospice in Towson. He was 66. Mr. Economakis, who had lived in Towson since 1971, developed a variety of flavorful soups that he sold to supermarkets, bowling alleys, corner markets, or anywhere else that someone wanted a hot meal.

He also catered private parties. "His soups were about the best I've ever had," said David Rubin, who routinely bought Mr. Economakis' soups at the Fair Lanes bowling establishment in Timonium. "I'd drink a cup at lunchtime and stayed filled for the rest of the day." Mr. Economakis' soups especially his cream of crab had a thick broth that had a lasting effect on the consumer, Mr.

Rubin said. The New York City-born Mr. Economakis began his career in the 1950s in a family-owned restaurant in Elwood, where he later owned several restaurants. He moved to the Towson area in 1971 and managed Towson Inn on York Road. But while managing the restaurant, he began to develop and market his Homemade Soups By George.

He left the restaurant business about five years ago and retired two years ago. "He liked making soups and cooking," said his brother, Gus Economakis of Perry Hall. "That's what he liked to do best. He liked to make soups to order. If some establishment had a need for crab soup, for example, he'd deliver." Craig Parker, owner of Parker's of Towson, said that Mr.

Economakis' soups always have good consistency and that his market often sold 4 to 6 gallons a day. "They were very good always fresh-cut vegetables and very consistent," Mr. Parker said. Mr. Economakis was with his mother, brother and sister in his mother's hometown of Kalamata, Greece, when the German invasion of World War II left them stranded.

Their passports were hidden, and the family spent the war years as "Greek citizens," Gus Economakis said. While a teen-ager, Mr. Economakis briefly joined the Greek resistance movement to help thwart the Nazi occupation. The family rejoined Mr. Economakis' father in New York after the war.

In 1960, Mr. Economakis and Nancy Hamblen were married. They divorced in 1970. Services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Monday at St.
